ZyXEL'S New IDSL Bridge/Router Speeds Through Traffic on Information Superhighway

New Prestige 128L Brings the Power of IDSL for LANs, High Speed Access to the Internet

ANAHEIM, CA, November 17, 1997 - ZyXEL Communications today announced a breakthrough IDSL (IDSN Digital Subscriber Line) Bridge/Router that gives remote access users and telecommuters a new, high-speed way to access the Internet and to speed through large data files on corporate Intranets.

The new Prestige 128L IDSL Bridge/Router takes full advantage of both ISDN and Digital Subscriber Line technologies that allow users to transmit full duplex data at 128Kbps through an existing carrier network infrastructure. This new device makes it easy for users to quickly access and download high-resolution multimedia data, transmit large files and speed through graphics-laden Web sites faster than before.

"With the introduction of the Prestige 128L, ZyXEL is raising the bar on IDSL connectivity price/performance," said Munira Brooks, marketing and sales manager for ZyXEL. "Already popular in Europe and other non-North American markets, IDSL is an emerging communications technology that is successfully freeing bottlenecks in the Information Superhighway. The Prestige 128L is fully applicable for a growing number of users worldwide who need high speed access to the Internet or high bandwidth availability for remote accessing resources on the corporate LAN or Intranet."

Previously, users needed an enterprise-class WAN router connected to an external 2B1Q baseband modem to provide LAN-to-LAN connectivity. However, these routers cannot provide IDSL servers configurations for remote office/branch office (ROBO) environments. The Prestige 128L provides users with an integrated solution that combines the functionality of these devices into a single system. The Prestige 128L is ideally suited as an IDSL server in ROBO environments, giving the users the full advantages of high speed access to the Internet and to the corporate Intranet.

ZyXEL's new Prestige 128L Bridge/Router represents an extension of ZyXEL's flagship LAN/modem products into an emerging market of high speed Internet and LAN access and data transmission. The Prestige 128L provides superior Internet access and transmission, and multi-protocol LAN-to-LAN connectivity for remote access. In addition, the Prestige 128L offers ZyXEL's superior network management and security features available in other Prestige-branded products.

The IDSL Difference
IDSL is an emerging technology which uses a single pair of copper wire - like a local loop 2-wire phone line - to transmit full duplex data at 128Kbps over a distance of up to 18,000 feet. In some applications, IDSL is referred to as Digital Short Haul.

The Prestige 128L Bridge/Router provides LAN-to-LAN connection over IDSL. The Prestige 128L can be configured as an IDSL server or locally as a client, thus serving as a replacement for traditional WAN bridge/routers using a 2B1Q baseband modem. A pair of Prestige 128Ls can replace a terminal server used to connect remote workstations from the host side.

Like other Prestige brand devices, ZyXEL's innovative Single User Account (SUA) technology and Network Address Translation (NAT) permit Prestige 128L users to access the Internet and corporate network simultaneously through dynamic IP addresses. This feature lets users pay for a single IP address while enabling multiple users to access the Internet.

Easy Network Management; Easy User Security
The Prestige 128L employs a menu-driven user interface for local or remote network management via Telnet connections. It features integrated SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) for simplified management with other connected SNMP devices in the corporate enterprise. The DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) server featured in the Prestige 128L simplifies the set-up of client workstations, including Windows 95 and Windows NT. Call history and syslog features allow for comprehensive call-tracking. The Flash EPROM simplifies upgrades and feature enhancements with no chance of disrupting a user's configuration.

For system security, the Prestige 128L is protected by administrator's password and all incoming and outgoing calls can be tracked and logged. User authentication protocols include PAP and CHAP. Caller ID and call-backs with password protection provides an added measure of security.

Pricing & Availability
The Prestige 128L is priced at $999 and is scheduled to ship in December of 1997.
