ZyXEL ZyWALL Firewall Series Features New Content Filtering Functionality

Hsinchu, January 5, 2004 -- ZyXEL Communications (TSE:2391), world's leading broadband access solution provider, today introduced all-new content filtering functionality for its ZyWALL firewall series. Unlike other static, built-in categorized URL database, ZyXEL's latest filtering design employs a dynamic outsourced data center, bringing a more accurate and manageable content filtering system to medium and small-sized business users.

"Ater adding the new content filtering functionality to the ZyWALL series, the products will represent a higher value to both the users as well as ZyXEL's marketing efforts, said Felix Chang, Director of ZyXEL's Network Security and Application Division. "The new filtering function has several advantages over other similar mechanisms: The outsourced data center updates its records automatically, so the administrators are waived from either purchasing additional hardware or software, or downloading the new updates manually. The administrators can also retrieve real-time reports through a Web interface. These innovations greatly minimize the operational costs and boost precision for small enterprises that demand exceptional return on IT investments."

The content filtering functionality of ZyWALL series provides a comprehensive URL database, and categorized it into "violence", "sexually explicit", "drugs", etc. Through an intuitive graphical user interface, the administrators can select one or more categories to block access accordingly. ZyXEL is currently offering a 30-day free trial to users, and the service can be extended through payments after trial period.

In addition to the categorized URL database, ZyWALL strengthens its defense with a second-tier URL blocking mechanism: Keywords can be assigned by the administrator, and any Web page containing the keywords will be deterred. Exceptions can also be set by the administrators when required.

For advanced settings, ZyWALL is equipped with Policy Management features. For example, the administrators are able to control the time slot or IP range available to the users, so the network availability policy can be arranged with full flexibility. Additionally, since the Web features such as ActiveX, Java Applet, Cookies, Web Proxy may introduce security concerns, ZyWALL also has the ability to limit such usage.

Availability
ZyWALL 10W and ZyWALL 70 are the current models to include the new feature, and the complete ZyWALL line is expected to support content filtering in the near future. The ZyWALL 70 can be ordered via ZyXEL's global sales network of system integrators and value-added resellers.
