ZyXEL Announced Immediate Availability of PPPoE Capabilities for Its Prestige 642M ADSL Modem

Hsinchu, Taiwan, December 28, 2000 -- ZyXEL today announced immediate availability of PPPoE (PPP over Ethernet, RFC 2516) on its Prestige 642M ADSL modem.

ZyXEL's Prestige 600 family represents the world's first commercially available ADSL CPE to implement PPPoE. It��s PPPoE patent submission has been filed in the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), Taiwan Intellectual Property Office (IPO), European Patent Office, and Intellectual Property office of P. R. China. PPPoE adds to ZyXEL's leading position in the broadband market by delivering a more complete ADSL solution, and providing a significant competitive advantage while establishing business relationship with global DSL service providers.

The new PPPoE feature is included in the Prestige 642M V2.50 AR.X firmware, which preserves all the benefits of previous version, as well as the flexibility to enable/disable PPPoE depending on the service provider��s requirements. About PPPoE
PPPoE is an IETF Draft standard (RFC 2516) specifying how a personal computer (PC) interacts with a broadband modem (i.e. xDSL, cable, wireless, etc.) connection. PPPoE preserves the existing dialup networking infrastructure to better facilitate more widespread ADSL usage by easier deployment for users and service providers. Internet services are charged by time usage similar to a traditional dialup scenario.

One of the benefits of PPPoE is the ability to let end users access one of many network services, a function known as dynamic service selection. This enables the service provider to easily create and offer new IP services for end users.

Operationally, PPPoE saves significant effort for both the end user and ISP/carrier, as it requires no specific configuration of the broadband modem at the customer site. By implementing PPPoE directly on the ADSL CPE rather than an individual��s computer, the computers on the LAN do not need PPPoE software installed. It eliminates the need for service providers to install PPPoE software on individual computers. Moreover, users can still enjoy the benefits of PPPoE regardless of the changes on their computer platform or OS version.
