ZyXEL and Kaspersky Lab Join Forces to Offer Gateway Antivirus on New ZyWALL UTM with Innovative Stream-Based Scanning Technology
Hsinchu, Taiwan and Moscow, Russian Federation, September 7, 2005 -- ZyXEL Communications (TSE: 2391), the world's leading broadband access solutions provider, announced today its successful collaboration with Kaspersky Lab that has resulted in Kaspersky antivirus award winning technology being seamlessly integrated into the forthcoming 8-in-1 ZyWALL Unified Threat Management (UTM) products. In addition, users will be offered a six month trial subscription for Kaspersky Anti-Virus database updates, allowing SMB users to enjoy protection and performance comparable with higher-end systems at less cost.
When evaluating the current threat risk of any computer system, the standard is to examine what is actually circulating around the world. Detection of in-the-wild viruses is an important metric used to validate the quality of antivirus products. As a response to the reality of modern network-borne threats, a special sub-set of signatures for viruses In-The-Wild (ITW) has been recently introduced by Kaspersky Lab. This sub-set of Kaspersky antivirus signatures has been implemented into ZyWALL UTM to effectively protect the gateway against ITW viruses at wire speed, before virus infections can reach the desktop. Kaspersky ITW virus list is maintained and updated constantly based on data gathered by the Kaspersky Virus Lab. Combined with ZyXEL's innovative "Stream-based" scanning technology, ZyWALL UTM delivers high performance antivirus protection.
"Integrating Kaspersky Anti-Virus technology with our ZyNOS4 network operating system will provide our SMB users with a package that outweighs some corporate offerings," said Kerming Chen, VP of ZyXEL's SMB and Consumer Business Unit. "Today, most SMB-class security gateways employ file-based virus scanning that inspects whole files only after placing each of them into the temporary memory. However, if the file being scanned exceeds the size of the available memory, the inspection may not function completely, giving viruses and malware a chance to penetrate a network. Worse yet, it also requires considerable processing power and memory to carry out the packet reassembly process, which decreases system performance and throughput significantly. We are delighted that Kaspersky Lab and ZyXEL have been able to eliminate these limitations in our information security solutions for SMBs."
With ZyXEL's latest "Stream-based" virus scanning technology, ZyWALL UTM passes every individual packet to be scanned by the antivirus engine. This process requires no additional memory or packet reassembly process and therefore does not impact on throughput, regardless of file size.
"Kaspersky partners rely upon our reputation and expertise to deliver superior antivirus protection service as part of their security solutions. This joint R&D project is a good example of our effective collaboration with broadband access solutions providers and has led to the appearance of this innovative product that offers real benefits to SMBs. As the brainchild of two leading security developers, ZyWALL UTM is the world's first solution to deliver real-time scanning of network traffic against the most dangerous viruses. Next generation protection from malware and inside attacks, ease of installation and management, robust functionality, and cost-effectiveness make ZyWALL UTM the ideal solution for small and medium sized businesses", commented Vitaly Bezrodnykh, Business Development Director at Kaspersky Lab.
