ZyXEL Announced Enhancements on Its Broadband Sharing Gateway with Wireless LAN Solution

New Prestige 316E Offers Multiple Options of External Antennae to Maximize Reach and Coverage

Hsinchu, Taiwan, May 31, 2001 -- ZyXEL Communications Co., (TAI: 2391.TW) a pioneer manufacturer and supplier of DSL Customer Premise Equipment (CPE), today announced its new broadband sharing gateway with wireless LAN solutions, the Prestige 316E and ZyAIR series.

This new broadband access solution includes the Prestige 316E, a futuristic dual Ethernet router with a built-in Access Point that gives SOHO and multi-workstation users flexible mobility and reliable access to the Internet via DSL or cable internet access.

Equipped with an antenna connector, the new Prestige 316E offers a series of external antennae which fit into different wireless LAN environments. ZyXEL's external antennae extends the coverage area, and focuses the signal direction to improve the connection quality.

Combined with the ZyAIR100 PCMCIA card, PCI and USB wireless adapter, ZyXEL's new wireless broadband access solution connects multiple laptop and desktop users together to the Internet and offers the convenience and mobility that only wireless technologies can provide.

Prestige 316E Broadband Sharing Gateway with 11Mbps Wireless Access Point
Designed as a dual Ethernet broadband sharing gateway, ZyXEL's Prestige 316E provides one 10Mbps Ethernet as a WAN port for connecting to a DSL/cable modem or a broadband router for super-fast Internet access. It is equipped with one 10/100Mbps Ethernet port as well as a built-in 11Mbps IEEE 802.11b-compliant Access Point for wireless LAN connections, allowing users to connect to the local area network or high-speed Internet without any wiring infrastructure.

The Prestige 316E supports a full range of network management and ease of installation tools. ZyXEL's Web-based GUI configurator simplifies initial installation and configuration. Using a menu-driven user interface, the Prestige 316E can be managed either locally or remotely via a Telnet connection.

About the ZyAIR Wireless Solution
ZyXEL provides high-speed wireless LAN connections to users who need to access e-mail, network information or the Internet anywhere in the office or at home. ZyXEL's wireless LAN PCMCIA card, the ZyAIR 100, is an 11 Mbps IEEE 802.11b-compliant wireless PCMCIA card. It works under both Ad-Hoc and Infrastructure mode. Under Ad-Hoc mode, a peer-to-peer connection between two hosts can be built, and users can share LAN resources without hassle. The ZyAIR 100 is also able to communicate with a Prestige 316E Access Point under infrastructure mode, which allows users to work anywhere in the coverage area and enjoy the convenience and mobility of a wireless gateway.

The ZyAIR 100 supports 1, 2, 5.5 and 11 Mbps auto transmission rate selection, which provides up to 890 feet/270M coverage area in an open environment. Through its roaming capability (IEEE 802.11 compliance) the ZyAIR 100 offers the seamless flexibility to move between different Access Points. It's Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) mechanism securely encrypts the data and offers reliable transmissions.

ZyXEL's broadband wireless LAN solution also provides USB and PCI adapters, allowing LAN users to build up their optimize wireless network flexibility.

Availability & Warranty
The ZyAIR Wireless Solution is available now and the Prestige 316E broadband sharing gateway is scheduled to be available in the third quarter of 2001. ZyXEL's broadband sharing gateway with wireless LAN solution will be distributed through ZyXEL's global network of distributors. ZyXEL offers a warranty period of up to 2 years covering materials and workmanship.
