The Prestige 480 Gives SMB for High-Speed and Flexible Internet Access Alternative to Other Leased Line Services

Hsinchu, September 14, 1999 - ZyXEL Communications Corporation, a leading provider of Internet Access Solutions, today announced the immediate availability of its new Prestige 480, the first product to provide an integrated dual BRI ISDN solution for SMB users. With ZyXEL's Prestige 480, users can realize a very high-speed, reliable and cost-efficient solution for Internet access, LAN-to-LAN connectivity, and remote access.

ZyXEL's Prestige 480 represents the industry's first router equipped with dual BRI and 10/100M Ethernet support. This unparalleled design enables two BRI to be used independently for up to four destinations simultaneously in any incoming/outgoing combination or be bundled in a single connection to speeds of up to 256Kbps or even higher with compression enabled. With this broadband Internet access solution, businesses can enjoy the digital highway through dynamic bandwidth optimization while significantly minimizing their costs compared with conventional Fractional T1/E1 solutions.

"With this unprecedented design of dual BRI, ZyXEL provides SMB users with a high performance solution that leverages the performance and flexibility of existing ISDN service," said Tony Hsu, Assistant Vice President of Product Marketing & Management at ZyXEL. "While recent broadband technologies such as ADSL and cable evolve constantly, the initial cost and charge rates are still a critical issue for some small offices. ZyXEL developed the Prestige 480 to provide maximum performance for these users adopting the ISDN technology to which they are most accustomed, while reducing their total cost of ownership."

High-performance, Cost-effective Solution to the Internet
With ZyXEL's innovative Single User Account (SUA), the Prestige 480 reduces communication costs by supporting an unlimited number of LAN users with a single IP address. To manage the connections and bandwidth most efficiently, the Prestige 480 incorporates Dial-On-Demand (DOD) and Bandwidth-On-Demand (BOD) capabilities. The BOD feature over Prestige 480's 4 B-channels allows dynamic dial-up or release to an additional line depending on the level of traffic, allowing adaptive transmission rates from 64Kbps to the speeds of up to 256Kbps. This smart bandwidth allocation brings users cost-effective advantages which are not available through conventional leased lines.

Easy Configuration, Management and Security
As well as delivering the integrated functionality of an ISDN router, the Prestige 480 comes bundled with a full suite of networking management capabilities and security features. ZyXEL's new Windows-based Prestige Network Commander (PNC) simplifies installation and management support, and the ability to act as a DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) server enables the Prestige 480 to automatically assign IP addresses while client stations log onto a TCP/IP network. Integrated SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) support makes it easy to manage with other connected SNMP devices within a corporate enterprise. In addition, the Prestige 480 provides complete security features such as PAP, CHAP, CLID and call back for user authentication.

Availability
Available now, the Prestige 480 can be purchased through ZyXEL's authorized distributors.
