Zyxel adds another layer of protection for your network

Zyxel has recently decided to make sandboxing available on all its ATP firewall appliances as standard, giving customers a valuable added layer of protection for their mission-critical networks and services, as Thorsten Kurpjuhn, Market Development Manager Europe, explains.

It’s amazing how quickly the world embraces and consumes new technologies. Digital security is a great example. At one time, antivirus protection was a specialist field in its own right. Then came protection against other forms of malware, denial of service attacks, intrusion detection and prevention, identity protection, and two-factor authentication. All these are now regarded as more or less “standard” requirements for network security gateways and firewalls.

The latest addition to that list is sandboxing. Previously, we would have identified sandboxing as a premium feature and indeed, we offered it as an optional extra on our ZyWALL ATP range of firewalls.

Ingenious technology

The sandbox is an ingenious technology. It safeguards against unidentified threats while they are still in their “zero-day” phase and thus have more of a chance to sneak past the perimeter defences of the network. Sandboxes work by detecting unusual or different patterns in data traffic, isolating suspicious packets, then analysing them for any potential threat before they are passed onto the intended recipient.

The sheer volume and sophistication of threats that are now being generated has led to the sandbox becoming an essential component of network digital defences. This is why we have now decided to include this premium option as a standard feature on our ATP range of appliances.

Sales of our ATP firewalls have been growing strongly. They offer advanced threat protection designed specifically for SMBs, with built-in web filtering, application patrol, anti-malware, reputation filtering, collaborative detection and response, secure WiFi, and reporting. Customers have increasingly been asking for the sandboxing capability to be activated on their ATP appliances.

Protecting against downtime

It is not only the increased number of threats though. It’s also become much more important to protect systems from downtime. Digital transformation has led to an even greater dependency on networks and connectivity – and as they become more mission-critical, so does the need to protect them from potential outages. This means safeguarding against every conceivable threat.

Unfortunately, the scale and nature of the threats continue to grow. The uncertainty and disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, and latterly by the war in Ukraine, has meant that there is an increased prevalence and risk of cyberattacks. The danger is very real and the potential for disruption is high. We need to do all we can to protect networks in every way that we can.
