ZyXEL to Unveil New IP DSLAM Series at CeBIT 2002

An Efficient and Cost-effective Way to Deliver Broadband Service for Today and the Years Ahead

Hannover, March 13, 2002 -- ZyXEL Communications Co., (TAI: 2391.TW) a leading broadband access solution provider, today announced new IP-based DSL Access Multiplexer (DSLAM) series which offers service provider an efficient and cost-effective way for broadband service delivery. A live demonstration of the new solution including Video-on-Demand and E-learning applications is available at ZyXEL's booth (Hall 16, B01) at CeBIT 2000 in Hannover.

ZyXEL's IP DSLAM includes the AES, SES and IES series. The AES series provides IP-based ADSL service, the SES series provides IP-based G.shdsl service and the IES series provides ADSL, G.shdsl and VDSL services. The solution allows carriers and broadband service providers to offer broadest set of standards-based DSL services for both central office application and remote installation, ranging in speeds from 128 Kbps up to 16 Mbps with loop reach up to 18,000 feet (5.5km).

Using the existing infrastructure of copper wires, ZyXEL's IP DSLAM solution allows providers to start DSL service with minimum installation time and expenses. IP-based DSLAM provides a distinct advantage over typical ATM-based DSL access system, since IP is the most natural approach for data transmission and provides better bandwidth utilization, ease of use and low cost advantage. Especially in newly developed areas, the build-out of IP networks can be much more efficient than ATM infrastructure. ZyXEL's IP DSLAM series is the most cost-effective solution for service providers to generate large and profitable revenue quickly.

ZyXEL's IP DSLAMs provides both port- and tag-based VLAN features, offering the benefits of security and performance. The Internet Group Management Protocol (IGMP) snooping feature optimizes bandwidth utilization for applications such as broadcast video. New mechanisms have also emerged to ensure Quality of Service (QoS). With a rich set of management features, the DSLAM can be easily managed by any SNMP manager or web browser.

AES-100 IP-based Mini-DSLAM
The AES-100 is a compact and innovative ADSL mini-DSLAM composed of dual ADSL network modules. Each ADSL network module provides eight multi-mode ADSL ports with built-in POTS splitter. The AES-100 utilizes an Ethernet port as a backhaul interface to uplink to a router/switch. Its compactness is perfect for limited space in both central office application and in-building installation. More information on the AES-100 visit http://www.zyxel.com/product/mtu/adsl.htm#aes100.

SES-1024 IP-based Mini-DSLAM
The SES-1024 is a compact and innovative G.shdsl mini-DSLAM which multiplexes traffic from 24 G.shdsl subscribers into one 100M Ethernet port that connects to any Ethernet switch or broadband router. Its compactness is perfect for limited space in both central office application and in-building installation. With 2.3 Mbps symmetric transmission characteristics over single loop, the SES-1024 is also applicable for leased-line replacement.

IES-1000 IP-based Mini-DSLAM
The IES-1000 is a compact, dual-slot G.shdsl or ADSL Annex B mini DSLAM which supports high-speed data transmission up to 2.3 Mbps over single copper pair. It features a 16-port G.shdsl/ADSL Annex B switch with a 1U rack height enclosure. Each enclosure is equipped with two 8-port G.shdsl/ADSL Annex B modules with hot-swappable capability. Its compactness is perfect for limited space in central office collocation or in-building installation. With 2.3 Mbps symmetric transmission characteristics over single loop, the IES-1000 is also applicable for leased-line replacement.

IES-2000 IP-based DSLAM
With higher port density design, the IES-2000 is an ideal solution for service providers to deliver full-range DSL services from their central offices. The IES-2000 is a 6-slot ADSL/G.shdsl/VDSL DSLAM which supports high-speed data transmission up to 16 Mbps over single copper pair. It's 4U rack-mountable chassis is composed of 1 slot for management switch card and 5 slots for DSL line cards. Each line card is equipped with up to 12 VDSL, 24 ADSL or 24 SHDSL ports, which provide up to 120 lines on one rack.

IES-3000 IP-based DSLAM
Supporting high density DSL, the IES-3000 is a 16-slot ADSL/G.shdsl/VDSL DSLAM which supports high-speed data transmission up to 16 Mbps over single copper pair. It's 9U rack-mountable chassis is composed of 2 slot for management switch cards and 14 slots for DSL line cards. Each line card is equipped with up to 24 ADSL or 24 SHDSL ports, which provide up to 336 lines on one rack.

"ZyXEL's IP DSLAM solution minimizes the cost of ownership, provides better bandwidth utilization and ease-of-use competitive edge for new services that today's providers need," said Yuh-Lung Chen, V.P. of Central Office Equipment Business Unit at ZyXEL. "By eliminating the need of ATM infrastructure, the new solutions are expected to save potentially hundreds of thousands of dollars in initial infrastructure costs, while generating new revenue sources and reducing provisioning and operational expenses."
