ViaSat Joins with ZyXEL to Deliver Innovative Broadband Access to Multi-Tenant Units; Highspeed Internet Powered by Infineon Technologies' VDSL Chipsets
Hsinchu/Taiwan, Munich/Germany, Carlsbad/California, November 24 -- ViaSat Inc. (Nasdaq: VSAT), ZyXEL (TSE: 2391) and Infineon Technologies (FSE/NYSE: IFX) today announced that they have joined their technologies to introduce a new broadband terminal package for the Multi-Tenant Unit (MTU) market. The new system called Constellation allows delivery of Internet access and broadband applications via satellite link to an in-building switch, and access for individual units using conventional copper wiring. It enables service providers to offer low-cost broadband access to multi-tenant unit customers in reach of satellites using the existing in-building infrastructure.
The Infineon 10BaseS' (Ethernet over VDSL) chipset is integrated into the ZyXEL VDSL VES-1012 Ethernet Switch, which routes broadband services over existing telephone copper wires in multi-tenant buildings. The high-speed return channel and bandwidth-on -demand (BoD) features of the ViaSat LinkStar' broadband satellite terminals provide efficient and low-cost two-way broadband to the ZyXEL switch, and then on to building tenants.
"Broadband access for the MTU market segment has remained underserved until now mainly due to high customer premises equipment prices and lack of other access alternatives. This innovative product reduces the subscriber CPE price substantially below traditional fixed line broadband access," said Bruce Fakhari, ViaSat vice president of business development. "The combined technologies and products from ZyXEL, Infineon, and ViaSat enable service providers to offer a variety of broadband services to customers in apartment buildings, shopping malls, hotels, and office parks over telephone copper lines, further reducing the in-building installation and operation costs."
The MTU communications market has emerged to address the growing broadband connectivity needs of tenants residing and working within these buildings. Up until now this market has been mainly served by traditional terrestrial fixed line solutions in the major metropolitan downtown areas. Constellation expands this market to residents that live in the areas where terrestrial networks are either not readily available or not cost effective. Typical applications include Internet access, streaming multimedia and extended access to corporate networks.
"Our collaboration with ViaSat and Infineon further brings VDSL service to where it was impossible in the past," said Yu-Long Chen, vice chairman of ZyXEL. "As a global leader in VDSL technology and MTU solutions, ZyXEL is confident that this cooperation will lead to today's most advanced broadband service. People in the urban areas gain a cost-effective alternative for their broadband systems, while suburbs can also get access to state-of-the-art VDSL via satellite technology."
"We are very proud of the quick results of the collaboration between ViaSat and ZyXEL, based on Infineon's VDSL technology, said Mark Tyndall, vice president business development Wireline Communications at Infineon Technologies. "As the market leader in VDSL, we are striving for the number one position as a technology lifestyle solutions provider by enabling broadband services to new markets."
