ZyWALL firewall series joins elite club with Common Criteria certification

World’s top computer security accreditation highlights Zyxel’s commitment to giving public-sector clients the network security they require

Hsinchu Taiwan, 4 June 2018Zyxel Communications today announced that its ZyWALL firewall line has received Common Criteria certification – the top international accreditation available for computer security.

Attaining the certification is difficult, requiring a product to be evaluated rigorously and repeatedly against the Common Criteria (ISO/IEC 15408) to verify that it possesses the security attributes it claims to. The accreditation is extremely rare as a result; 236 network and network-related devices and systems have received it since the criteria were established, and only a fraction of those have been firewall products.

“This certification is a tremendous validation of our security team’s years of hard work,” said Dean Shih, senior AVP of Zyxel’s Gateway Unit. “This is the best testament we could ask for that ZyWALL delivers exactly the rigorous defense it promises on the box. The timing is especially good as we’re currently expanding into the government, health care, and banking sectors, where security is absolutely critical.”

He continued: “Clients in these sectors often deal only with contractors and vendors who use Common Criteria-certified products. In fact, receiving this certification has allowed us to move forward with a large-scale case in an Asian country involving approximately 1,000 health clinics.”

The Common Criteria were developed in the 1990s by the Canadian, French, German, Dutch, UK, and U.S. governments by unifying the various IT security standards of the time. Its first version was released in 1994 and it became an ISO/IEC standard in 1999. Evaluations are carried out only at ISO 17025-certified laboratories.

Zyxel’s certification was awarded by the Netherland’s Brightsight BV, the world’s largest independent security evaluation lab. As the certification report states, ZyWALL firewalls were found to successfully counter threats posed by unauthorized access and actions as well as to achieve security objectives, including ones relating to flow control, encryption, and protected management.

Real-time protection

The ZyWALL line provides powerful real-time protection that ensures service continuity, optimal CP performance, and improved network control while safeguarding customer and company records, intellectual property, and critical resources from external and internal threats.
