Office Networking Tips

Question:
Does wireless encryption slowdown the throughput of wireless networks?

Answer:
Yes, Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) and Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) encryption do add overheads because of the encrypt/decrypt calculations. The exact impact depends on the processing capabilities of the network device. Newer routers with faster processors can support WEP and WPA security with minimal impact on the throughput performance. Thus the benefits far outweigh the drawbacks when enabling security on newer devices.
