Carrier Sense Multiple Access (CSMA) Media Access Control (MAC) protocol is used in shared networks (for example Ethernet). Devices verify that other traffic is not present before transmitting. “Carrier Sense” means that the devices listen to make sure there is not already a carrier wave before transmitting. “Multiple Access” means multiple devices send and receive through the same medium.
