In a network, there may be more than one route to the ISP(s). If an alternate gateway is on the LAN and has an IP address in the same subnet as the primary gateway's LAN IP address, traffic from the WAN can go directly to a LAN computer without passing through the primary gateway and its firewall protection. This is called an asymmetrical or "triangle" route.
