Statement for the Compliance to the Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006 - REACH and ZyXEL's Green Policy Statement

Statement for the Compliance to European Union's EuP Directive Requirements
ZyXEL declares that the company's products that are shipped to and sold on the European market after January 1, 2010 will be compliant with the European Union's EuP Directive (2005/32/EC) requirements.

Aiming to reduce environmental burden and improve environmental performance, the Energy Using Products (EuP) Directives adopted by European Parliament and the Council established a framework for eco-design requirements that administrating energy-using products. ZyXEL's EuP compliant products will meet with the energy and resource consumption standards to follow the objective of the EuP Directives: Improve energy efficiency throughout the product's lifecycle from mining of the raw materials to its end-of-life recycling.

With commitments to the environment, ZyXEL will work continuously on improving the environmental performance of its products and take every effort a step further by actively decreasing greenhouse gas emissions to underline its role as a responsible global corporate citizen.

ZyXEL Green Collaboration System

ZyXEL not only makes its operations comply fully with the three EU directives - WEEE (Waste Electronics and Electrical Equipment), RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) and the recent EuP (Eco-Design Requirements for Energy Using Products) - but also enforces the policy when working with our suppliers. In order to realize this "green management" standard, ZyXEL management organized a unique "Green Collaboration System" to monitor all "cradle to grave" stages such as material supply, manufacturing, assembly, transportation, and the use and decommission of its products for environmental care. The system consists of three major parts:

1. Green Products Design
- Green Design Database:
By employing more energy-efficient, waste-reducing, lightweight materials that are toxin free and easily recyclable in product design and listed in complied "Green Design databases"

- EuP LCA Management System:
"Life Cycle Analysis" (LCA), in compliance with EuP requirements, is regularly carried out on all products.

- 3R & Disassembly Reports:
During product design, ease in disassembly and distribution for the 3R (Re-use, Recycle and Recovery) is strongly taken into consideration.

2. Green Supply Chain Platform for Suppliers
The platform is for suppliers to upload the WEEE, RoHS and EuP compliance information requested by ZyXEL for "Green" suppliers and quality management.

3. Green Product Recycle for End-of-Life
ZyXEL regularly generates 3R and disassembly reports on recycling processes for end-of-life products, outlining related achievement targets and successes. The "Environment Design Declaration" is also published on the ZyXEL Website for branch offices and distributors to observe in order to build a comprehensive recycle management model.

In addition, ZyXEL has also established a "WEEE Registration Control and Management Platform" to assist and manage ZyXEL branch offices and distributors in registering with the environmental authorities of their respective countries.

ZyXEL's Environment Product Declaration (EPD)

ZyXEL is committed to responsible environmental practices throughout our business. We conform to international standards and view protecting the environment as a top priority and basic corporate responsibility.

Based on the Type III Environment Declaration, ZyXEL initialed life-cycle analyses on one of our product serials, ADSL CPE Series, and to have an Environment Product Declaration (EPD) of these products verified by a third party. The EPD is defined as quantified environmental data for a product with pre-set categories of parameters based on the ISO 14040 series of standards, but at the same time, not at the exclusion of additional environmental information. To achieve EPD certification, calculation rules (so-called Product Category Rules, PCR) have to be established first.
According to the EPD methodology, key data in the following categories shall be declared, such as:

  1. Global warming kg / CO2
  2. Acidification kg / SO2
  3. Ozone depletion kg / CFC-11
  4. Photochemical oxidant formation     kg / ethane
  5. Eutrophication              kg / P2O5

ZyXEL is the first broadband communication company adopting the set of PCR for ADSL CPE products in the world, and this methodology may be used as a model by other companies when they follow suit.

Our Low Carbon Footprint

As green house gases (GHG) continue to raise global temperatures and adversely affect the global climate, the importance of ISO14064 standards for control of corporate GHG emissions, as established in the 1997 Kyoto Protocol, is increasingly significant. By voluntarily controlling and reducing its ‘carbon footprint,' ZyXEL aims to fulfill what we believe to be a basic corporate responsibility, with an eye towards benefiting society as a whole.

A "carbon footprint" is a "measure of the impact human activities have on the environment in terms of the amount of greenhouse gases produced, measured in units of carbon dioxide".It is meant to be useful for individuals and organizations to conceptualize their personal (or organizational) impact in contributing to global warming. In response to the momentum surrounding the ‘carbon footprint' issue, ZyXEL is now aggressively establishing CO2 control and evaluation systems in the entire lifecycles of all company products. Such efforts brought ZyXEL a "Corporate Social Responsibility" award from Global View Magazine in 2007 for being one of the few companies to have a GHG emission verification mechanism. Upon completion of this system, ZyXEL is taking its efforts a step further by actively decreasing its GHG emission and thus underlining its role as a respectable enterprise.
