ZyXEL addresses Internet of Things (IoT) potential with NWA5301-NJ access point

New AP supports three wired Ethernet and multiple wireless connections, providing ZyXEL partners with the potential to address current and developing needs for multiple device use in key markets

15.4.2014

ZyXEL Communications, a leading supplier of networking and communications solutions, is addressing the burgeoning Internet of Things (IoT) market by launching the NWA5301-NJ – a wireless access point that has three Ethernet ports and voice support, making it ideal for multiple end-point connections in homes, guest rooms, classrooms or work spaces where provision for the use of WiFi and multiple Ethernet-based, Internet-ready devices is needed.

Deploying the NWA5301-NJ access point in a hotel room, for example, would enable a smart TV, a tablet or notebook PC, and a Power over Ethernet (PoE) IP phone to be directly connected to the device, thus enabling continuous usage and higher speeds for video streaming, file downloads and smooth, uninterrupted audio communications.

The access point can also be used to enable connections to other IoT devices, such as fridges and mini-bars, interactive whiteboards and displays in schools, and smart TVs, heating, lighting and security and access control systems in homes. In addition, it provides excellent, wide-ranging 802.11n dual-band wireless connectivity for multiple devices.

Jon Pearce, Head of Market Development Europe at ZyXEL, expects the market opportunity for the access point to develop rapidly over the next 12 months. “We see very considerable and rapidly-growing potential for the NWA5301-NJ, which has been developed in direct response to feedback from our customers and partners. There is a clear market need for an access point that will support WiFi with pass through connectivity for a PoE device and the NWA5301-NJ provides a simple, convenient and effective solution that meets those requirements today, so this is an immediate and distinct opportunity for ZyXEL partners.”

It also paves the way for what promises to be a really exciting market over the next five years, Pearce adds. “While today the requirement to support IoT devices is centred on vertical sectors, such as hospitality and education, we are also starting to see demand for this capability in the wider market. It is clear that BYOD is playing a significant part in the bigger IoT picture. The explosion in smartphone and tablet use has driven the need to provide access to many more devices and more users now want to access Internet services such as i-players, cloud-based applications and services, for entertainment and for work, wherever they are.

“We are now starting to see IoT as a real market driver. This will add a new dimension to connectivity, as there will be multiple devices that will need to draw power on demand and have Internet connectivity at all times – smart TVs and IP phones in hotel rooms, IP surveillance cameras, digital video recorders and power and heating controls in homes, interactive whiteboards, printers and NAS storage devices in schools.

“The potential is massive. According to Gartner, by 2020 the market for IoT devices will be worth $300bn and all of those products will need to be connected, not only to the Internet but also to a power source. The NWA5301-NJ provides both capabilities in one convenient unit and we see this – and the series of wireless and PoE products that we now have in development – as being very significant revenue contributors for ZyXEL and its partners over the next few years.”

The NWA5301-NJ is a unified access point that can be used in stand-alone or as part of a wider controller-managed wireless network with ZyXEL’s NXC2500 and NXC5500 controllers. It can be mounted in any EU standard wall-plate to provide convenient access to both wired and wireless connectivity for all IP devices, and clutter-free, secure deployment. The mounting is designed to work with most commonly-used EU regulation outlet boxes.

Three wired Ethernet connections – one of which is a pass-through PoE port that can be used to power devices such as IP phones, APs or IP cameras – are available and multiple wireless associations can be reliably supported across an area of up 165 square metres through the NWA5301-NJ’s high-gain MIMO antenna. As well as IP handsets, conventional analogue telephones are supported via a pass-through port. Dual-band capability and support for up to eight SSIDs provides the added flexibility to set-up multiple wireless LANs.
