A higher-end switch effectively enhances network performance for demanding businesses
October 21, 2003

(Hsinchu, October 20, 2003) ZyXEL Communications (TSE:2391), world's leading broadband access solution provider, today unveils its Dimension ES-4024 Layer 3 Switch designed for medium- and small-sized businesses. The ZyXEL Dimension ES-4024 offers flexible fiber-optics interface, clustering network management capability, as well as comprehensive security mechanisms that assure its users with high-quality connectivity and rock-solid network protection.

"With conventional Ethernet switches capable of only Layer 2 packet exchange, the ever-growing complexity of modern enterprise network would clog up the corporate backbone, which lead to the deterioration of network performance." Dr. Yuh-Long Chen, ZyXEL's Vice Chairman of Central Office Business Unit, maintains, "On the other hand, Dimension ES-4024 is capable of recognizing the packets above Layer 3; provides excellent Layer 3 switching performance, and reduces undesirable data flow by preventing the forwarding of corrupted packets. These advantages complement the flaws of Layer 2 switches on network performance. It is simply the best choice for network managers deploying the corporate backbone."

Dimension ES-4024 is a 1U height, 19-inch rack-mountable device. It sports two Gigabit Ethernet (GBIC) slots that provide its users with standard GBIC fiber-optics interface; and two optional independent Gigabit copper modules. The IT staff has the freedom to choose appropriate GBIC transceiver or copper modules for constructing the corporate backbone.

On the Layer 3 routing, Dimension ES-4024 supports Static Routing, as well as routing protocols such as RIP V1/V2 and OSPF. The IT staff may take advantage of the powerful Layer 3 switching capability of Dimension ES-4024 by planning carefully according to the complexity of the network.

For network management, Dimension ES-4024 supports the "clustering management" feature developed by ZyXEL. With this feature, Dimension is able to search other Dimension switches on the network using "software stacking" technology, which enables the IT staff to manage up to eight switches with just one IP address. In other words, the provisioning, configuration and monitoring tasks can be performed though the single-IP management interface to all the switches on the network, dramatically simplifies the daily network administration chores.

Dimension ES-4024 weights in on the security side too: aside from Layer 2 MAC address and Layer 3 IP filtering, it affords Layer 4 packet filtering as well, which deters suspicious "prying eyes" from inside the corporate network. In addition, Dimension ES-4024 also supports 802.1x user authentication to block the unauthorized users from accessing network resources.
